In 'The Wheel of Time', what is the main protagonist's name?

The story behind the answer

The main protagonist of The Wheel of Time is Rand al'Thor.

Rand begins Robert Jordan's series as a young shepherd from the isolated Two Rivers village of Emond's Field. His life changes when Trollocs attack the village and he escapes with Moiraine Damodred, an Aes Sedai. He gradually learns that he is the Dragon Reborn, the prophesied reincarnation of Lews Therin Telamon and the figure destined to confront the Dark One.

Rand is introduced in The Eye of the World, published in 1990. Although The Wheel of Time follows a large ensemble—including Egwene al'Vere, Perrin Aybara, Mat Cauthon, and Nynaeve al'Meara—Rand is the central protagonist and the character whose destiny drives the series' main conflict. His story explores leadership, prophecy, political power, and the psychological cost of wielding the One Power.

Jordan wrote the first eleven novels. Brandon Sanderson completed the final three after Jordan's death, using extensive notes left by the author. The fourteen-volume main sequence concluded with A Memory of Light in 2013.
