In the video game Borderlands, what is Pandora?

The story behind the answer

In the video game Borderlands, Pandora is a planet.

Pandora is the main setting of the original Borderlands and remains central to the wider series. The games portray it as a dangerous frontier world with settlements, bandits, corporations, alien ruins, and hostile wildlife. Vault hunters travel across the planet in search of legendary Vaults and their rumored technology.

The Borderlands setting uses Pandora as a science-fiction frontier rather than as a direct retelling of the Greek myth. Its name suggests mystery and the release of powerful consequences, while the plot develops its own mythology around the Eridians, the Vaults, and the alien creature known as the Destroyer.

This Pandora should not be confused with the moon in Avatar or Saturn’s small moon. In Borderlands, it is a full planet in the game’s fictional universe, and its harsh landscape supplies the series’ characteristic mix of exploration and combat.
