In the US, what does a yellow pentagon sign indicate?

The story behind the answer

In the US, a yellow pentagon sign indicates a school zone ahead.

The pentagonal shape is an unusual exception to America’s mostly diamond-shaped warning signs. Its outline resembles the front of a small schoolhouse, making it easier to recognize quickly. The sign warns drivers that a school area, student crossing, or related school traffic condition is ahead.

It does not automatically establish a particular speed limit. A separate regulatory speed-limit sign, often accompanied by a flashing beacon or a time period, states any reduced speed that drivers must obey. The pentagon is primarily a warning about the presence of children and increased pedestrian activity.

School-zone signs may show two walking figures, a schoolhouse symbol, or words such as “SCHOOL.” Designs and fluorescent colors can vary, but the pentagon remains strongly associated with school areas in the United States and Canada. A playground sign is different: it warns of recreational activity, not necessarily a school or a school-zone traffic rule.
