Pasadena's Rose Parade is held on New Year's Day rather than New Year's Eve.
The event is officially the Tournament of Roses Parade and is organized by the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association in California. Its route is famous for elaborate floats covered with flowers and other natural materials, as well as marching bands and equestrian units. The parade traditionally takes place on January 1.
The celebration began in 1890 as a promotional winter event intended to showcase Pasadena's mild climate. It later became closely linked with college football through the Rose Bowl Game, which is also played in Pasadena around New Year's Day. Together, the parade and game form one of the United States' best-known New Year holiday traditions.
The parade is sometimes casually called the Rose Bowl Parade, but that is not its official name; the Rose Bowl is the stadium and football game. Also, when January 1 falls on a Sunday, the parade is traditionally moved to January 2, following the event's “Never on Sunday” rule.
