Pasadena, California, stages the annual Rose Parade on New Year's Day after New Year's Eve.
The parade is officially the Tournament of Roses Parade and is organized by the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association. It is famous for floats covered with natural materials such as flowers, seeds, leaves, and bark. Marching bands and equestrian units also take part.
The first parade was held in 1890, when members of Pasadena's Valley Hunt Club promoted the mild Southern California climate with a procession featuring flowers and other attractions. The event later became linked with the Rose Bowl football game, although the parade and game are separate events.
The parade normally takes place on January 1, but its scheduling follows a long-standing rule: if January 1 falls on a Sunday, the parade moves to Monday, January 2. This is why it is not literally held every calendar year on January 1, despite its strong New Year association.
