The annual football game traditionally played on New Year’s Day at Pasadena’s Rose Bowl stadium is the Rose Bowl Game.
The game is part of the Tournament of Roses celebrations in Pasadena, California. It is widely known by the nickname “The Granddaddy of Them All” because it is the oldest currently operating bowl game in college football history.
The first Rose Bowl was played in 1902, although the event was not held annually as a football game until 1916. Its traditional date is January 1, except when January 1 falls on a Sunday, when the game is moved to January 2 under the event’s longstanding scheduling practice.
The Rose Bowl Game is often confused with the Rose Parade, which takes place in Pasadena on the same holiday occasion. The parade features decorated floats and marching bands; the Rose Bowl Game is the separate football event held in the stadium.
