In the United States, what shape is the standard yield sign?

The story behind the answer

In the United States, the standard yield sign is an inverted triangle.

The sign has a red border, a white centre and the word “YIELD” in red lettering. Its distinctive downward-pointing shape lets drivers recognise the instruction even when the sign is partly obscured or viewed from the back.

A yield sign requires a driver to slow down and give priority to traffic on the conflicting road or path. The driver may proceed without stopping if the way is clear, unlike at a stop sign, where a complete stop is required.

The inverted triangle is used internationally for priority control, although wording and colour schemes differ. In the United States, the shape also distinguishes yield signs from yellow diamond warning signs and the octagonal stop sign.
