In the Twelve Labors of Hercules, whose cattle did Hercules steal during his tenth labor?
Answer
Geryon’s cattle
Answer
Geryon’s cattle
Hercules stole Geryon’s cattle during his tenth labor.
Geryon was a three-bodied giant who lived in the far western land of Erytheia. His red cattle were guarded by the herdsman Eurytion and the two-headed watchdog Orthrus. Hercules had to travel a great distance to reach them and then bring the herd back to Eurystheus.
The journey included Hercules’ passage across the ocean in the golden cup associated with Helios. After reaching Erytheia, Hercules killed Orthrus, Eurytion, and Geryon before driving the cattle away.
The exact geography of Erytheia was debated in antiquity. Later writers often associated it with the Iberian Peninsula, but the myth’s central point is the cattle’s ownership by Geryon and their place in the tenth labor.
