In the Twelve Labors of Hercules, Queen Hippolyta owned the belt Hercules was ordered to obtain.
Hippolyta was the queen of the Amazons, a legendary warrior people associated with the region around the Black Sea. Her belt, or girdle, was reportedly given to her by Ares, the god of war, and became the object of Hercules’ ninth labor.
The labor was commissioned by Eurystheus after his daughter Admeta expressed a desire to possess the Amazon queen’s belt. In some versions, Hippolyta initially agreed to give it to Hercules peacefully after hearing why he had come.
The expedition turns violent in later parts of the myth. Hera spreads a rumor that Hercules intends to abduct Hippolyta, prompting the Amazons to attack. Hercules kills Hippolyta in the ensuing confusion and takes the belt. Ancient and later retellings differ on exactly how the conflict begins, but Hippolyta remains the consistent owner of the belt.
