In the Twelve Labors of Hercules, which god was the father of the Amazon queen Hippolyta?

The story behind the answer

In the Twelve Labors of Hercules, the Amazon queen Hippolyta was the daughter of Ares.

Hercules was ordered to obtain Hippolyta’s belt, a prized object associated with her status as queen of the Amazons. In mythic genealogy, Hippolyta was commonly identified as the daughter of Ares, the Greek god of war, and the Amazon queen Otrera.

The labor does not have one completely uniform narrative. In one tradition, Hippolyta initially welcomed Hercules and was willing to give him the belt, but Hera stirred conflict by spreading a rumor that the hero intended to abduct her. In another tradition, Hercules fought the Amazons and took the belt by force.

This changing story is why summaries may differ about Hippolyta’s fate and the circumstances of the encounter. Her divine parentage, however, is consistently linked with Ares in the standard tradition.
