In the Twelve Labors of Hercules, what was the Amazon capital where Hercules sought Hippolyta’s belt?

The story behind the answer

Themiscyra was the Amazon capital associated with Hercules’ quest for Hippolyta’s belt.

Themiscyra was an ancient city traditionally placed near the mouth of the Thermodon River on the southern coast of the Black Sea. Greek mythology presented it as the principal city of the Amazons, a legendary society of warrior women. During the ninth labor, Hercules traveled there to obtain the girdle or belt of their queen, Hippolyta.

In one version, Hippolyta initially welcomed Hercules and agreed to give him the belt. Hera then spread a rumor that Hercules intended to abduct the queen, causing the Amazons to attack. Hercules killed Hippolyta during the confusion and escaped with the belt. Other versions alter the details and names, but Themiscyra remains the standard city associated with the Amazon episode.

The story is distinct from the later Roman tradition of the Amazons around the Aegean. Themiscyra’s exact historical identification is debated, while its mythological role is clear.
