In the TV series House M.D., who portrays the title character, Dr. Gregory House?

The story behind the answer

Hugh Laurie portrays Dr. Gregory House in the television series House M.D.

Laurie, an English actor and musician, played the brilliant but abrasive diagnostician throughout the show's entire eight-season run. The role made him internationally famous for performing an American character with an American accent, despite his British background.

House first aired in 2004 and follows a diagnostic medicine team solving unusually difficult medical cases. Laurie’s performance emphasized House’s sharp observational skills, sarcasm, physical pain, and dependence on Vicodin. The character was also deliberately constructed with echoes of Sherlock Holmes, including his deductive reasoning and complicated friendship with James Wilson.

The role earned Laurie multiple major nominations and awards attention, including Golden Globe wins. A common mix-up is confusing the actor with David Shore, who created the series, or with Robert Sean Leonard, who played Wilson. Laurie remained the central performer until the series finale in 2012.
