In the TV series House M.D., who portrays the diagnostician Dr. Gregory House?

The story behind the answer

Hugh Laurie portrays the diagnostician Dr. Gregory House in House M.D. Laurie is an English actor, musician, and comedian who became internationally recognized for the role.

Before House, Laurie was known for British comedy, especially the sketch series A Bit of Fry & Laurie and the historical comedy series Blackadder. His casting was notable because the production wanted an American-sounding voice for House, while Laurie is English; he achieved the accent during his audition.

House M.D. ran from 2004 to 2012 and made Laurie one of television’s highest-profile dramatic actors. The character is a brilliant but abrasive physician who leads a diagnostic team at the fictional Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital.

Laurie received multiple Primetime Emmy Award nominations for playing House. He also appeared in films including Sense and Sensibility and the Stuart Little series, and later took roles in television projects such as The Night Manager.
