In a traditional quinceañera court, the honoree’s female attendants are called damas.
Damas is the Spanish plural of dama, meaning “lady.” These attendants form part of the court of honor and may participate in the entrance, formal choreography, photographs, and other planned parts of the celebration. The male attendants are commonly called chambelanes, though terminology and the size of the court vary widely.
The court is not a fixed requirement, and contemporary celebrations often adapt or omit it. Some honorees choose friends of different genders, a smaller group, or no court at all. Damas should not be confused with madrinas, a term generally used for adult sponsors or godmothers who may help provide items or services for the event.
