In the traditional Pandora myth, hope remained inside after the troubles escaped.
When Pandora opened the container, destructive forces or illnesses flew out and spread among humanity. Hope remained inside after the lid was closed, according to the familiar version of the story. This detail has produced centuries of debate because hope can be understood either as a comfort preserved for humans or as another force withheld from them.
The Greek word used by Hesiod is elpis, which can mean expectation or hope. Its exact interpretation is disputed, so translations and explanations do not all present the ending in the same way. Some emphasize that hope was left behind for humanity; others ask whether it was trapped inside.
The phrase “Pandora’s box” is itself a later popular expression. Hesiod described a large storage vessel rather than a small box, but the enduring story still centers on hope’s final position.
