In the Times Square New Year's Eve celebration, from which building is the ball lowered?
Answer
One Times Square
Answer
One Times Square
In the Times Square New Year's Eve celebration, the ball is lowered from One Times Square.
The tradition began in 1907, when a ball was lowered from the flagpole atop the former New York Times building to mark midnight. The newspaper had helped give Times Square its name after moving its headquarters there in 1904.
The original ball was made of iron and wood and was illuminated with 100 light bulbs. Modern versions have become much larger, brighter, and more technologically elaborate, with Waterford crystal panels and computer-controlled lighting.
One Times Square remains the symbolic home of the event even though the building has been used for changing commercial purposes. The ball descends for about 60 seconds, reaching the base at midnight on January 1. A common mix-up is identifying the nearby Empire State Building as the launch point; it is famous for its own New Year's Eve lighting, but it does not host the ball drop.
