In the television series Murder, She Wrote, what is Jessica Fletcher’s occupation?

Jessica Fletcher is a mystery writer in the television series Murder, She Wrote.

Played by Angela Lansbury, Fletcher is a former English teacher who becomes a successful author of mystery novels. She repeatedly encounters murders during travels or in her fictional coastal Maine hometown of Cabot Cove and uses observation, questioning, and deduction to identify the culprit.

Murder, She Wrote premiered in 1984 and ran for twelve seasons, followed by four television films. Lansbury remained the central star throughout the series, making Jessica Fletcher one of television’s most recognizable amateur detectives.

The character is often described as an amateur investigator because she is not a police officer or professional detective. Her occupation is specifically a mystery writer, and the show frequently links her fictional writing experience with her ability to recognize motives, suspicious behavior, and the structure of a crime.
