Hugh Laurie plays Dr. Gregory House in the television series House M.D.
Laurie is an English actor, musician, and comedian who became internationally famous through the medical drama. Before House, he was widely known in the United Kingdom for comedy work with Stephen Fry, including A Bit of Fry & Laurie and Jeeves and Wooster.
House M.D. was created by David Shore and premiered on Fox in 2004. Laurie’s performance turned its abrasive, intensely observant diagnostician into the show’s central figure. House is inspired partly by Sherlock Holmes, particularly his deductive reasoning, isolation, and reliance on a close friend.
The role earned Laurie multiple award nominations and two Golden Globe wins. Although the character is American, Laurie performed with an American accent throughout the series, a detail often noted in interviews and behind-the-scenes coverage.
