In the story that Roland tells his companions about his past, what is the name of his first lover?

The story behind the answer

In Roland's account of his past, his first lover is Susan Delgado. Their story is told most fully in Wizard and Glass, the fourth novel in Stephen King's The Dark Tower series. Roland meets Susan when he and his young companions are sent to Hambry, in the Barony of Mejis, for their safety.

Susan is being pressured into becoming the mayor's “gilly,” or consort, but she and Roland fall deeply in love. She helps Roland and his friends oppose the forces connected with John Farson and escape after they are framed for the mayor's murder. Their relationship becomes one of the defining tragedies of Roland's life.

Susan is eventually captured and publicly burned at the stake. Roland chooses to continue his quest for the Dark Tower rather than turn back to save her, a decision that haunts him throughout the series. Readers sometimes confuse Susan with later members of Roland's ka-tet, but she belongs to his earlier life and is remembered as his great, often described as only true, love.
