The standard Monopoly board game has two purchasable utility spaces: Electric Company and Water Works. Utilities are distinct from the colored street properties and from the four railroads.
A player who owns one utility charges rent based on the opponent’s dice roll, while owning both utilities increases the multiplier. The classic rules use four times the dice roll for one utility and ten times the dice roll for both. Utilities do not use houses or hotels.
Electric Company is located after St. Charles Place, while Water Works appears after Ventnor Avenue. Their positions and names can vary in themed or localized editions, but the traditional American board has exactly two utility spaces. They are represented by service providers rather than streets or transportation companies.
