In the standard Greek myth, who was Pandora’s husband?

The story behind the answer

In the standard Greek myth, Pandora’s husband was Epimetheus.

Epimetheus was a Titan associated with hindsight and was the brother of Prometheus. Zeus sent Pandora to him after Prometheus had stolen fire and given it to humanity. Although Prometheus warned Epimetheus not to accept gifts from Zeus, Epimetheus welcomed Pandora.

Pandora and Epimetheus are therefore paired in the myth as the first woman and her husband. Their story is distinct from the later flood tradition in which Deucalion and Pyrrha survive a catastrophic deluge and repopulate the human world.

The name Epimetheus is often contrasted with Prometheus: it is commonly interpreted as “afterthought,” while Prometheus is associated with foresight. That contrast helps explain why Epimetheus accepts Pandora despite his brother’s warning.
