In the standard Chinese zodiac order, which animal comes immediately before the Rooster?

The story behind the answer

In the standard Chinese zodiac order, the Monkey comes immediately before the Rooster.

The relevant part of the sequence is Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. Monkey is ninth overall, while Rooster is tenth. After Pig, the cycle returns to Rat, so the order is circular rather than a line with a permanent beginning or end.

The Chinese zodiac is often presented through stories about a race of animals, but the sequence also belongs to a broader calendrical system. Each animal corresponds to one of the 12 earthly branches used in traditional Chinese timekeeping. The animals can therefore appear in calendars and hour designations as well as year names.

Names vary slightly across English sources: Goat may also be translated as Sheep or Ram, and Rooster may be called Chicken. Those translation differences do not change the position of Monkey between Goat and Rooster in the standard Chinese sequence.
