In the Spanish remake of Cheers, Sam Malone’s equivalent is Nicolás “Nico” Arnedo, nicknamed Nico.
The 2011 Spanish series kept the Cheers title but relocated the premise to an Irish-style pub in Spain. Alberto San Juan played Nico, the pub’s owner and bartender, whose character was explicitly modeled on Ted Danson’s Sam Malone. Like Sam, Nico is portrayed as a womanizer with a strong personality and a central role in the bar’s daily life.
The remake aired on Telecinco and premiered in September 2011. Its cast also included Spanish counterparts for characters such as Frasier Crane, Diane Chambers, Norm Peterson, Cliff Clavin, Carla Tortelli, Coach and Woody Boyd. The Spanish production used a translated version of the original theme song, “Where Everybody Knows Your Name.”
A common mix-up is to answer “Sam Malone,” the original character’s name, rather than the Spanish equivalent. “Nico” is the nickname used for Nicolás Arnedo, making it the canonical answer for the remake.
