In the shoe-change tradition of a quinceañera, high heels replace the honoree’s flats.
The ritual is often called the changing of the shoes. A parent, frequently the honoree’s father, may remove her flat shoes and put on formal high-heeled shoes. The change symbolizes a move from childhood toward young womanhood.
This custom is separate from the choice of the quinceañera dress. Some families perform the shoe change during the reception, while others do not include it at all. Practical adaptations may also be made for comfort, health, age, or the type of celebration.
The tradition should not be treated as a universal requirement. Quinceañeras differ greatly across countries and families, and many contemporary celebrations reinterpret symbolic rituals in ways that fit the honoree.
