In The Shining, the haunted hotel room is numbered 237.
Room 237 is located in the Overlook Hotel, where Jack Torrance works as the winter caretaker and stays with Wendy and Danny. Danny is warned to avoid the room, but the film gradually reveals why it is associated with the hotel’s supernatural danger.
Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 film changed the room number from 217, which appears in Stephen King’s novel. The change was made because the Timberline Lodge in Oregon, used for exterior shots of the Overlook, reportedly did not want guests to fear staying in an actual room 217. The lodge instead has a room numbered 237.
This difference is a frequent source of trivia confusion. In the book, room 217 is the important room; in Kubrick’s film, the number is 237. The film’s hotel interiors were primarily created on studio sets rather than filmed inside the real lodge.
