In The Saga of the Volsungs, what is the name of Sigmund’s sword that Sigurd later inherits?

The story behind the answer

In The Saga of the Volsungs, Sigmund’s sword that Sigurd later inherits is named Gram.

Gram is the famous sword associated with the Völsung heroes. Odin places it in a tree, and Sigmund alone can draw it out. During a later battle, Odin shatters the weapon, fulfilling the sword’s connection to divine destiny while ending Sigmund’s use of it.

Sigmund’s son Sigurd receives the broken pieces, and the smith Regin reforges them. The restored Gram becomes the weapon Sigurd uses to kill the dragon Fafnir. In the saga’s symbolic structure, the sword links father and son and carries the family’s heroic inheritance across generations.

Gram is sometimes confused with other legendary blades. Tyrfing belongs to a separate Scandinavian sword tradition, Dáinsleif appears in the Skjöldunga tradition, and Hrotti is another weapon associated with Sigurd in later versions of the legend.
