In The Rye, what bread does George try to sneak into the Ross apartment?
Answer
Marble rye
Answer
Marble rye
George tries to sneak a marble rye into the Ross apartment in “The Rye.”
Frank Costanza brings a loaf of marble rye to dinner at the Rosses’ home, but the hosts fail to serve it. Frank takes the bread back, and George worries that the slight will damage the relationship between his parents and Susan’s parents. He therefore plots to replace the loaf secretly and make it appear that the bread was merely misplaced.
The plan becomes increasingly chaotic. Jerry steals the last matching loaf from an elderly woman at the bakery, while George and Jerry attempt to get it into the third-floor apartment. Their scheme ultimately involves a fishing pole and is exposed when the Rosses catch George in the act.
“The Rye” originally aired on January 4, 1996, as season 7’s 11th episode. The story was inspired by writer Carol Leifer’s recollection of guests bringing food to a gathering and taking it home after it went unserved. The bread is specifically marble rye, not challah, sourdough, or pumpernickel.
