In the quinceañera tradition, what birthday is being celebrated?

The story behind the answer

A quinceañera celebrates a girl's fifteenth birthday.

The Spanish word quinceañera can refer both to the celebrant and, by extension, to the birthday celebration. The related phrase fiesta de quince años literally means “party of fifteen years.” In many Latin American communities, the event marks a symbolic transition from childhood toward young womanhood.

The celebration commonly includes a formal entrance, a special dress, family speeches, music, dancing, and a meal or reception. Some families also include a religious service, although the party and the religious observance are distinct parts of the occasion.

Customs vary greatly by country, family, religion, and generation. Turning fifteen is therefore the defining age, but the size, schedule, clothing, and rituals of a quinceañera are not universal.
