In “The Pony Remark,” Manya dies after Jerry makes his remark about hating people who had ponies as children. Jerry’s parents bring him to Manya and Isaac’s 50th-anniversary dinner, where his joke unexpectedly insults Manya because she had owned a pony growing up in Poland.
Manya leaves the dinner upset, and Jerry soon learns that she has died. He worries that his tactless comment somehow caused her death, especially because the funeral conflicts with his championship softball game. The episode plays that guilt for comedy while also showing Jerry’s habit of treating social obligations as competing inconveniences.
At the funeral, the eulogist remembers Manya’s pony as the “pride of Kraków.” Her husband, Isaac, later reassures Jerry that Manya had forgotten the remark and had been more upset about the potato salad. The implication is that Jerry did not literally cause her death, even though the episode lets him imagine the possibility.
The episode first aired on January 30, 1991, as the second episode of season two and the seventh overall. It also introduced Uncle Leo, played by Len Lesser, as a recurring character.
