In the Pokémon video-game series, which region is the setting of the original Pokémon Red and Green?

The story behind the answer

The original Pokémon Red and Green games are set in the Kanto region.

Kanto is the first major region in the Pokémon game series. Players travel through towns, routes, caves, forests, and seas while challenging eight Gym Leaders and eventually the Elite Four. The journey culminates in the Pokémon League.

Several locations in Kanto became enduring franchise landmarks, including Pallet Town, Viridian City, Pewter City, Cerulean City, Lavender Town, and Saffron City. Professor Oak’s laboratory in Pallet Town is where the player begins the adventure and receives a first Pokémon.

Kanto is named after the real-world Kantō region of Japan, although the game map is a fictionalized setting. A common mix-up is calling the first region Johto, because Johto appears immediately afterward in Pokémon Gold and Silver. The original anime also begins in Kanto, helping make the region familiar to audiences worldwide.
