In the Pokémon franchise, which species was the first Pokémon created by Game Freak?

The story behind the answer

Rhydon was the first Pokémon created by Game Freak in the Pokémon franchise.

Rhydon appears in the original Generation I Pokédex as number 112, although its creation predates the final ordering of the species. It is a Ground/Rock-type Pokémon that evolves from Rhyhorn and later gained another evolution, Rhyperior, in Generation IV.

Rhydon’s design is especially notable because it helped establish the franchise’s early visual style. It is a bipedal, armored creature with a drill-like horn, thick limbs, and a powerful tail. Its appearance differs from the smaller, quadrupedal Rhyhorn.

The fact is sometimes confused with the question of which Pokémon was first shown or which Pokémon has the first National Pokédex number. Bulbasaur is number 0001, while Rhydon is the earliest-created species identified in Game Freak’s development history.
