In the Pokédex, what species classification is given to Pikachu?

The story behind the answer

The Pokédex gives Pikachu the species classification “Mouse Pokémon.”

Pikachu is an Electric-type Pokémon, but “Electric” describes its elemental type rather than its species classification. This distinction is a frequent source of confusion because Pikachu’s cheeks, tail, and electrical attacks make its type especially prominent.

In the original games, Pikachu is listed as National Pokédex number 025. Its Pokédex entries describe electricity stored in its cheek pouches and explain that groups of Pikachu can cause power outages when they gather.

Pikachu became the franchise’s best-known representative after appearing as Ash’s partner in the anime. It was also featured prominently in merchandise, the trading card game, and the Pokémon Yellow game. Although its design has rodent-like features, the official classification used in the Pokédex is the specific phrase “Mouse Pokémon,” not simply “electric mouse.”
