In the planned Allied invasion of Japan, what was the codename for the assault on Kyushu?

The story behind the answer

Operation Olympic was the codename for the planned Allied assault on Kyushu.

Olympic formed the first phase of Operation Downfall, the proposed invasion of Japan’s home islands. It was scheduled to begin on November 1, 1945, and aimed to capture the southern portion of Kyushu, Japan’s southernmost major island.

The Allies planned to use Kyushu as a base for air operations and as a staging area for a later assault on Honshu. Okinawa, captured in June 1945, was intended to support the enormous naval and logistical effort. The planned force included American Army and Marine divisions supported by a very large fleet.

Japan’s surrender canceled Olympic before it began. The operation is sometimes confused with Operation Coronet, which was the planned second phase against the Kanto Plain near Tokyo. Both names belonged to Downfall, but only Olympic concerned Kyushu.
