In the pilot, what is Diane Chambers's fiance named?

The story behind the answer

In the Cheers pilot, Diane Chambers’s fiancé is named Sumner Sloane.

Sumner brings Diane to the Cheers bar in “Give Me a Ring Sometime,” the series premiere that first aired on September 30, 1982. Diane expects to leave soon with him, but Sumner abandons her after revealing that he has chosen another woman and wants Diane to handle the breakup for him.

That betrayal supplies the pilot’s central turning point. Diane is left at the bar, where Sam Malone offers her a job and the series’ main relationships begin to form. Michael McGuire played Sumner Sloane in the episode.

The name is easy to confuse with later Cheers characters. Frasier Crane is introduced as Diane’s former professor and later becomes a major regular, but he is not her fiancé in the pilot. “Sumner Sloan” is an understandable spelling variant, but the episode’s credited character name is generally written “Sumner Sloane.”
