In the Philippines, round shapes are considered lucky in New Year's Eve foods and decorations.
Many Filipino New Year celebrations feature twelve round fruits, commonly understood to represent prosperity in the twelve months ahead. Families may also wear clothing with circular patterns or place coins in pockets and dishes. The circle is associated with coins, wealth, continuity, and the completion of a cycle.
The fruits vary by household and region. Apples, oranges, grapes, melons, and other round produce may be included, so there is no single mandatory list. The number twelve is the stable symbolic pattern, while the chosen fruit can differ.
This custom is sometimes confused with Spain’s midnight grape tradition. Filipino celebrations may also include grapes, but the emphasis is on roundness and the twelve-month symbolism rather than only on eating one grape per clock chime. Firecrackers and other noisy traditions have also been part of New Year culture, subject to local safety rules.
