In the Pandora myth, which Titan’s brother received Pandora as a bride?

The story behind the answer

In the Pandora myth, Epimetheus received Pandora as a bride.

Epimetheus is a Titan who appears in the story as Prometheus’s brother. His name is commonly interpreted as “afterthought,” contrasting with Prometheus, whose name is associated with foresight. Hesiod uses this contrast to characterize the brothers and to explain why Epimetheus accepts Pandora despite Prometheus’s warning.

Prometheus advises Epimetheus not to accept gifts from Zeus, but Epimetheus takes Pandora into his home. In the subsequent episode, Pandora opens the jar and the harmful forces escape into the world. The marriage therefore connects the Titan family story with the origin story of human troubles.

Epimetheus is not the same character as Prometheus, even though both are Titans and brothers. Prometheus is linked to the theft of fire and resistance to Zeus, while Epimetheus is linked to accepting Pandora and acting without foresight. Some modern summaries omit the family relationship, but it is central to the myth’s wordplay and structure.
