In the Pandora myth, Epimetheus was Pandora’s husband or companion.

Epimetheus was a Titan associated with hindsight and afterthought, while his brother Prometheus represented forethought. Hesiod’s Works and Days says Prometheus warned Epimetheus not to accept gifts from Zeus. Epimetheus ignored that warning and accepted Pandora, who had been fashioned and equipped by the gods.

The myth places Epimetheus at the center of Zeus’s punishment of humanity after Prometheus stole fire. Pandora’s arrival leads to the opening of the vessel that releases troubles into the world. Prometheus is therefore the better-known Titan in the story, but Epimetheus is the figure directly linked to Pandora as her recipient and companion.

Later retellings sometimes describe Pandora as Epimetheus’s wife, though ancient versions vary in how explicitly they define the relationship. Prometheus and Epimetheus should not be confused: one warns against Zeus’s gift, while the other accepts it.
