In the Pandora myth’s wider story, Prometheus received punishment by being chained to a rock. Zeus imposed this punishment after Prometheus stole fire and gave it to humanity.
Ancient Greek traditions describe Prometheus as bound while an eagle repeatedly ate his liver, which regenerated so the torment could continue. The punishment is part of the larger conflict between Zeus and Prometheus over the limits of divine authority and the benefits humans should receive.
Pandora’s creation follows this conflict in Hesiod’s narrative. Zeus responds to Prometheus’s theft of fire by arranging a dangerous gift for humanity and sending Pandora to Epimetheus. The chained Prometheus and the arriving Pandora are therefore connected episodes, although they are not the same event.
Atlas is another Titan punished by Zeus, but his punishment is different: he is associated with holding up the sky. Epimetheus, meanwhile, is Pandora’s husband and is not the Titan chained to the rock.
