In the Pandora myth, which Titan is punished before Pandora is created?
Answer
Prometheus
Answer
Prometheus
In the Pandora myth, Prometheus is punished before Pandora is created.
Prometheus is a Titan who helps humanity in Greek mythology. In Hesiod’s account, he deceives Zeus during a sacrifice and later steals fire for mortals, concealing it in a stalk of fennel. Zeus responds by withholding fire and then by arranging a broader punishment for humankind.
Pandora is part of that punishment. Zeus instructs the gods to create her, and she is sent to Prometheus’s brother Epimetheus. Prometheus had warned Epimetheus not to accept gifts from Zeus, but Epimetheus takes Pandora into his household. The vessel and its contents then bring suffering into human life.
Later writers and artists often emphasize Prometheus’s heroic gift of fire, while Hesiod’s poem also presents him as a troublesome challenger to Zeus. This difference helps explain why modern versions may feel more sympathetic to Prometheus than the earliest surviving narrative does.
