In the Pandora myth, which Titan is her husband’s brother and the thief of fire?

The story behind the answer

In the Pandora myth, Prometheus is the Titan who steals fire and is the brother of Pandora’s husband.

Prometheus is portrayed in Greek mythology as a benefactor of humanity. In Hesiod’s account, he tricks Zeus during a division of an animal sacrifice and later steals fire for mortals. Zeus responds by arranging punishment for humanity, including the sending of Pandora, and by punishing Prometheus himself.

Prometheus is the brother of Epimetheus, whose name is associated with afterthought. Zeus sends Pandora to Epimetheus even though Prometheus has warned him not to accept gifts from the gods. This family relationship links the fire story directly to the Pandora story.

Later Greek writers, especially Aeschylus, developed Prometheus into a more sympathetic heroic figure. Hesiod’s portrayal is more critical, emphasizing conflict with Zeus and the consequences of deception. The fire episode and the Pandora episode are therefore related but not identical parts of the larger myth.
