In the Pandora myth, Zeus orders Pandora’s creation.
Hesiod links the command to Zeus’s anger after Prometheus deceives him and steals fire for humanity. Zeus decides that humans should receive a destructive counterweight, so he instructs the gods to create a woman whose arrival will bring trouble to humankind.
The gods then contribute different qualities to Pandora. Hephaestus shapes her from earth, while other deities provide gifts such as beauty, speech, and skill. Zeus’s role is therefore the decision-maker and instigator, not the craftsman who physically forms her.
Modern retellings often simplify the myth into “Pandora opened a box.” The older Greek story is more specific: Zeus arranges Pandora’s creation and sends her to Epimetheus, who accepts her despite Prometheus’s warning not to accept gifts from Zeus.
