In the Pandora myth, Elpis personified the hope left inside the jar. Elpis is the Greek personification of hope and is the final element associated with Pandora’s opened container in Hesiod’s account.
When Pandora opened the jar, evils escaped and spread among humans. The story then says that only Elpis remained inside, after the lid was replaced. This detail has produced several interpretations: hope may be humanity’s consolation, a power held back from humans, or an intentionally ambiguous part of the myth.
Elpis should not be confused with a goddess who actively created Pandora. She is a personified concept, similar to the way Greek mythology personifies abstract ideas such as victory, truth, or justice. The exact moral meaning of her confinement is not settled.
