In the Pandora myth, which god crafted Pandora’s body from earth?

The story behind the answer

Hephaestus crafted Pandora’s body from earth in the Greek myth of Pandora’s box.

Hesiod describes Zeus ordering Hephaestus, the divine smith, to make Pandora. Hephaestus was the Olympian god associated with fire, metalworking, craftsmanship, and machinery, so the act of shaping a human figure suited his traditional role. The story describes the figure as being formed from earth and given human appearance.

Pandora was not created by one god alone in the surviving account. Other deities contributed qualities or adornments: Athena taught her crafts, Aphrodite gave her grace, and Hermes supplied a deceptive character and persuasive speech. These details make Pandora a collective divine construction rather than simply Hephaestus’s invention.

Later art often shows Hephaestus at a forge, but the myth is not a Greek version of a mechanical automaton story. The important point is that Zeus commissioned the creation and Hephaestus performed the shaping, after which the other gods helped prepare Pandora for her role among mortals.
