In the Pandora myth, which figure was Pandora sent to marry?

The story behind the answer

In the Pandora myth, Pandora was sent to marry Epimetheus. He was a Titan associated with hindsight and was the brother of Prometheus, whose name is associated with forethought.

Prometheus warned Epimetheus not to accept gifts from Zeus, but Epimetheus accepted Pandora when she arrived. The marriage places Pandora inside the household where the vessel is opened and the world’s troubles are released. This family relationship is central to Hesiod’s version of the story.

The names are easy to mix up because both brothers belong to the same mythic episode. Prometheus acts first by stealing fire for humans, while Epimetheus acts afterward and recognizes consequences too late. Pandora’s marriage to Epimetheus also gives the story a contrast between foresight and hindsight. Later retellings sometimes omit Epimetheus altogether, leaving Pandora’s arrival unexplained.
