In the Pandora myth, what was the only thing left inside the container after the other evils escaped?

The story behind the answer

In the Pandora myth, hope was the only thing left inside the container after the other evils escaped.

Hesiod says that Pandora released troubles into the world, but the container’s lid was closed before Hope could escape. The Greek word is elpis, often translated as hope. The detail creates one of the myth’s central interpretive questions: is hope a blessing preserved for humanity, or another ambiguous force held back from it?

The traditional English phrase “Pandora’s box” can obscure this ending because the original story involves a jar. The conclusion is also more complicated than the familiar idea that hope simply remains available to comfort people.

Later writers and artists frequently treat Hope as the positive remainder of the story. Yet Hesiod does not provide a simple moral explanation, so interpretations differ over whether its confinement is beneficial, harmful, or deliberately mysterious.
