In the Pandora myth, Zeus intended Pandora’s arrival to punish humanity for receiving fire.
The background is the conflict between Zeus and Prometheus. Prometheus steals fire and gives it to humans, enabling civilization, technology, cooking, and metalworking in the mythic explanation. Zeus responds by planning a punishment that will affect both Prometheus and humanity.
Pandora is part of that response. Hesiod’s story presents her as a divinely created woman whose arrival introduces a new burden to human life. The container episode follows after she reaches Epimetheus, Prometheus’s brother.
This detail is sometimes simplified into the claim that Pandora herself stole fire, but she did not. Prometheus is the fire thief in the myth. Pandora’s role is connected to the punishment that follows the theft, while her creation and the jar belong to Zeus’s wider plan.
