In the original God of War, what object does Kratos seek to defeat Ares?

In the original God of War, Kratos seeks Pandora's Box to gain the power needed to defeat Ares. Athena sends him on this mission after Ares destroys Athens and Kratos agrees to serve the gods in exchange for freedom from his nightmares.

The box is hidden inside Pandora's Temple, a massive structure placed on the back of the Titan Cronos. Kratos must cross the temple's traps and monsters before opening it. The power within Pandora's Box allows him to become strong enough to challenge Ares directly.

The Golden Fleece and the Fates' Loom are important objects in later Greek-era games, but neither is the central objective of the 2005 title. Pandora herself is also a major figure in the game's story, yet the requested object is the box rather than the character.
