In the original Diablo, what is the name of the town where the game begins?

The story behind the answer

In the original Diablo, the game begins in the town of Tristram.

Tristram is the central settlement and narrative starting point of Blizzard North’s 1996 action role-playing game. The player arrives in a town troubled by the disappearance of its king and the corruption spreading beneath the local cathedral.

The cathedral provides the game’s main dungeon, with progressively deeper levels leading toward Diablo. Tristram functions as the player’s safe hub, where characters can speak with townspeople, buy equipment, repair items, and receive quests.

Tristram is also important across the wider Diablo series. Diablo II revisits the town in a ruined state during Act I, while Diablo III presents another version of its history through the New Tristram setting. New Tristram is not the same answer: the original game’s town is simply called Tristram.
