In the original 2007 Assassin's Creed, what is the name of the Assassin controlled by players?

The story behind the answer

In the original 2007 Assassin's Creed, the player controls Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad.

Altaïr is a Syrian Assassin and the central historical character in the first game. His name means “The Flying One, Son of No One” in Arabic, and the story follows his fall from grace and gradual restoration within the Assassin Brotherhood.

The game begins in 1191, during the Third Crusade. Altaïr’s missions take him through major cities including Masyaf, Jerusalem, Acre and Damascus. His targets include influential figures on both sides of the conflict, while his mentor Al Mualim directs the Brotherhood from Masyaf.

Altaïr is sometimes confused with Ezio Auditore, who leads Assassin’s Creed II and its two direct follow-ups. He also appears in later series lore, especially Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, which connects his life with Ezio’s. The original game established the series’ signature themes of parkour, stealth assassination and the conflict between Assassins and Templars.
