In The Origami King, Mario uses confetti to fill empty holes in the overworld.
The holes, officially called Not-Bottomless Holes, are tears in the paper-like environment caused by the game's origami conflict. Mario throws confetti from his Confetti Bag into them, restoring sections of scenery and often revealing coins, items, or useful paths.
Confetti is one of the game's defining paper-themed mechanics. Mario can collect more by striking trees, bushes, rocks, and other objects, as well as by defeating enemies. Larger holes require more confetti, so exploration and resource gathering are linked.
A common mix-up is paint, which serves a similar repair function in Paper Mario: Color Splash. The Origami King instead centers its overworld repair system on confetti, while Mario's separate 1,000-Fold Arms ability peels back parts of the scenery to uncover secrets. The game was released for Nintendo Switch in 2020 and blends action-adventure, role-playing, and puzzle elements.
